Keys to Successful Employment Search and Transition

  • Make a list of the types of jobs you feel most qualified to fill.
  • Make a list of the types of jobs you find most interesting – even if you don’t currently feel qualified to hold such a job.
  • In what environment would you most like to work?  Do you need to be out and on the move or are you more comfortable at a desk?
  • Think about the skills you have and your personal strengths.  How will these help you on the job?  Are you detail oriented?  Do you work best with little supervision?  Are you creative or are you the person who can organize someone else’s creative chaos?
  • Think about the type of people you enjoy being around?
  • Think of how well you establish relationships with others.  How will you work with colleagues?
  • Be realistic about your time management and your responsiveness to schedules.  Your ability to respond to demands may affect your work performance.
  • Think about whether job accommodations may be necessary.  Know when and how to discuss this with your employer.
  • Do your homework about prospective employers.  What can you learn about not only the job, but the employer before your interview?
  • Think about all your previous experience whether paid, volunteer, internship, or hobby.  How does your experience match with the jobs to which you apply?
  • Work with a coach to identify the best jobs, search techniques, and employment practices to enhance your success.
