Keys to Successful College Transition
- Plan early and make sure you consider your needs and interest. Following the crowd to the currently popular schools may not be the best place for you.
- Visit the schools you may want to attend. How do you feel on the campus? Be aware of your reactions. When you picture yourself enrolled are you positive and comfortable or are you concerned and overwhelmed?
- Identify your key strengths and passions. Enrolling in programs with a high level of interest will help you maintain your motivation.
- Be realistic about your academic performance so far. How well prepared are you for college studies?
- Choose an environment in which you will be most comfortable. If you are accustomed to being in a small school environment and relish lots of individual access to support, keep that in mind.
- Be realistic about your willingness to ask for support when you need it.
- Be honest with yourself about your ability and willingness to find resources independently.
- Being far away from home may seem like a good idea because you want independence, but consider how much previous experience you have had making your own decisions and being away from loved ones or key supporters.
Seek feedback and advice from people who have experience with college transition. Your best friends are not always your best resource for this information. Older siblings or high school alumni may be able to give you valuable, honest information about what college will be like to you
